It maintains a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by applying the brakes and accelerator when necessary. In most cases, it’s combined with other steering technologies like lane centering and changes.

1. Mazda CX-30

The adaptive cruise control in the CX-30 maintains a set following distance from the traffic ahead.

It uses radars to detect and calculate the speed of the vehicles ahead while simultaneously adjusting its own speed based on the information provided by the radar.

Mazda’s MRCC works with the Stop & Go feature which is just like adaptive control. Together, they maintain headway control by automatically aligning with the speed of the vehicle ahead.

Once your vehicle closes in on the vehicle ahead or the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly, the cruise control system gives a warning sound and sign on the display screen.

However, Mazda urges its users not to rely completely on the MRCC as it has some limitations depending on the type of vehicle, road conditions, weather, etc.

Thus, it is important to always drive carefully and be fully aware of your surroundings.

For safety, switch off the cruise control when it is not in use. Last, do not get out of the car while the ‘Stop Hold’ control is activated. It may cause the car to move unexpectedly.

2. Kia Soul

The cruise control in Kia is generally termed Highway Driving Assist. This system features a smart combination of cruise control and lane-centering assistance.

Like the others, it maintains a safe distance between the vehicle ahead while the lane assist keeps your vehicle in place. 

Highway Driving Assist uses the front view camera and the front radar to read the road and make sure the system is only used on highways.

That’s because it would not work optimally if you do not use it on an approved road. This Highway assist can also align its speed with the road’s speed limit sign or can be adjusted to a higher or lower speed.

Furthermore, if another vehicle cuts into the gap, the adaptive cruise control automatically reduces the speed to maintain a safe distance. If the vehicle ahead exits the road instead, your vehicle automatically speeds up to the pre-set speed.

Manufacturers are working tirelessly to make the next generation of this technology able to read the driver’s typical habits and match them with the cruise control.

However, it is important to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times. These systems aren’t completely autonomous yet.

3. Honda CR-V

The adaptive cruise control in Honda vehicles works remarkably like the ones we have discussed above.

It gauges the interval between your car and the vehicle ahead and brakes or speeds up depending on the distance.

The sensors and radars of the Honda’s cruise control are mounted at the front of the vehicle and at the windshield. The Honda’s ACC only includes a limited braking function.

Hence the driver still has a responsibility for stopping the vehicle to avoid a collision. Additionally, the cruise control may not operate in bad weather or terrible road conditions. 

The CR-V’s cruise control is activated by pressing the main button on the steering wheel. Adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist will then be displayed on the digital screen.

The cruise speed can be set while driving at a speed below 25 mph or when the car is idling. However, the default speed is 25 mph. 

The ACC distance control can also be adjusted. It has four different distance settings to choose from which are:

• Short
• Middle
• Long
• Extra Long

You can adjust these settings by pressing the interval button on your steering wheel. It will then display the number of bars representing the distance in the instrument panel.

4. Ford Bronco

Ford uses the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control on their recent models including the Bronco. This system does several things.

First,

• It employs advanced radar and cameras to detect the vehicle ahead.
• It then sets a cruising speed that maintains a safe distance from the vehicle
• It also brakes and speeds up depending on this safe distance as well

Second,

• The cruise control comes with a stop-and-go feature
• This allows the vehicle to come to a complete stop just like the vehicle ahead of it

Third,

• It comes with lane centering that scans the lane markings
• It then helps the vehicle stay in its lane
• It also combines speed sign recognition with cruise control to adjust to the road speed sign limit

For example, if the speed sign recognition system detects a 50 mph speed limit, it updates the cruise set speed to that same speed.

Further, if the vehicle stops for over three seconds, you must click the RES button to restart the process. You must also speed up to the set speed and then activate the ACC.

Note: The ACC may not work in bad weather, slippery roads, or inside tunnels. Thus, remember to stay alert while driving. Do not completely rely on the ACC for your own safety.

5. Nissan Rogue

They engraved the adaptive cruise control into the pro-pilot system of the Nissan. It features adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and lane-centering abilities as well.

The pro-pilot system supports braking, acceleration, and steering operations on the highway. It also keeps the vehicle centered in its lane while maintaining a predetermined distance from the cars ahead.

This system also operates with Navi- links which support deceleration corresponding to the size of the curve ahead. The Navi link can also adjust its speed to align with road speed sign limits.

However, the intelligent cruise control in the Nissan may not operate if the vehicle in front decelerates rapidly, or a vehicle suddenly cuts into the lane.

Those are some limitations that may be present even in other similar car models as well.

Also, if the sensor and cameras do not detect the vehicle in front, the car moves at the set speed regardless of the distance between them.

We cannot overemphasize that these systems aren’t perfect and should only offer drivers help not take unrestricted control.
