Interior noise testing often takes place both indoors and outdoors. For the outdoor test, an experienced test driver navigates different surfaces using specific tires with varying tread patterns.

To ensure the test predicts noise accurately, the racetrack may be prepared in advance to include patches of rough ground. Other noise-causing road objects such as speed bumps, manhole covers, steps, and potholes may also appear on the test track.
Indoor testing usually involves engineers monitoring tire noise at various speeds.
The procedure goes like this:
- Engineers place a dummy in the passenger seat of the car.
- This dummy will have microphones in its ears, connected to sound measurement sensors.
- Engineers speed up the car up to a certain speed level, and the mics record the ensuing cabin noise.
- This activates the sound measurement sensors, which then measure the volume of the tire noise transmitted to the vehicle’s cabin.
