Where Are Chevrolet Trax Made? (Solved & Explained)

The Chevrolet Trax is a crossover SUV that began production in 2012 for the 2013 model year.

It is one of the few Chevrolet models GM targeted at markets outside the United States. All assembly plants since production have been located in countries outside the U.S. as well.

The Chevrolet Trax was well received in parts of Asia, North America, and Europe in its debut year. As of 2013, it was only sold in the UAE, Lebanon, South Korea, Germany, Mexico, Canada, and some parts of Europe.

This article reveals, in comprehensive detail, all you need to know about GM’s production and assembly of the Chevrolet Trax.

Where Are Chevrolet Trax Being Made?

Like we mentioned earlier, the Chevrolet Trax is one of the few models that were originally intended for markets outside the U.S.

In the same vein, all the Trax assembly plants are located outside the United States.

The locations include Bupyeong-Gu, Incheon, South Korea; Shanghai, China; Asaka, Uzbekistan; San Luis, Potosi, Mexico.

Are Trax for the U.S. Markets Produced in the U.S.?

The Chevrolet Trax didn’t launch in the United States until 2015. However, none of the Trax assembly plants have been moved to the United States just yet.

The Bupyeong-Gu assembly in South Korea and the GM Potosi assembly in Mexico produce the Trax for global markets, including the U.S.

Are They Being Assembled in the U.S.?

The Chevrolet Trax is not being assembled in the U.S. at the moment.

The Bupyeong-Gu assembly plant in South Korea and the Potosi assembly in Mexico assemble the Trax for most global markets.

Other assembly plants include GM Shanghai Assembly in China and the Asaka assembly in Uzbekistan.

How Can You Check Where A Specific Trax Was Produced?

Every Chevrolet Trax model has a special 17-character code known as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

The code is key to finding out where exactly your Chevrolet Trax model was assembled and manufactured.

The VIN, when decrypted, reveals information including country of origin, production date, previous recall, and general vehicle history.

You can find the code on several spots in your Trax. That includes below the driver’s side door, under the driver’s side of the windscreen, and around the steering column.

You can also get it from your Trax model insurance card and the title records.

There are tons of free VIN decoders on the internet you could use for the decrypt.

Some of the best ones are The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) website, VIN Checkup, and several others.

Are Japanese Or European Built Trax Better?

GM has never had assembly plants for the Chevrolet Trax in Japan or any parts of Europe.

The closest assembly plant to Japan is located at the Bupyeong-Gu, South Korea.

And in Europe, production and supply of new Chevrolet models have ceased completely, and of course, there are no assembly plants.

Where Are Trax Made For The Australian Market?

In Australia and New Zealand, GM sold the Chevy Trax under the Holden brand and specially named the model “Holden Trax.”

The Bupyeong-Gu plant in South Korea and the Potosi plant in Mexico handled production for global markets, including Australia.

However, GM retired its Australian Holden Brand in 2020, which effectively truncated the supply of new Trax models.

GM has since launched an all-new Australian partner brand called General Motors Special Vehicles (GMSV).

While the Trax is not named amongst GMSV’s first releases, there is a decent chance of its return to Australia later.
