Where Are Chevrolet Equinox Being Made?
Owing to the model’s newfound popularity, General Motors has expanded the production of the Equinox to several factories worldwide. Presently, factories in Canada, Mexico, and China manufacture and assemble the Equinox models.
Equinox manufacturing locations include Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, and San Luis Potosi and Ramos Arizpe in Mexico.
The other is the plant in Hubei, China, which produces Equinox models both for the Chinese and international markets.
Are Equinox for the U.S. Market Produced in the U.S.?
Even though the Equinox enjoys popularity here, GM has never built the Equinox models in the US.
Instead, it builds Equinox models for the US market in Canada and Mexico.
The GM Ingersoll plant in Ontario, Canada, produces Equinoxes for the US market just like the GM Ramos Arizpe Plant in Mexico.
Are They Being Assembled in the U.S.?
For years, GM has never assembled the Equinox in the United States. It rather assembles them in Mexico and Canada, before importing them into the US.
How Can You Check Where a Specific Equinox Was Produced?
Depending on where you bought your Equinox, it should come with a Buyer’s Guide.
The Buyer’s Guide holds important details about your vehicle, like its specs and price.
The guide should also state where the parts were produced and the final assembly location of the vehicle.
If you didn’t get a Buyer’s Guide when you bought the Equinox (or you lost it), you can decode the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for its manufacturing location.
Here’s how to go about that:
- Check the first character in the VIN
- Cars made in the US have either 1, 4, or 5 as their first VIN digit.
- Conversely, cars made in Mexico and Canada have 2 and 3 as their first VIN digits.
- Cars made outside North America have a letter for the first VIN character.
- Check the eleventh character in the VIN
- The 11th VIN character is a “plant code” that identifies what factory assembled your Equinox.
However, you will need to get the list of plant codes of all GM factories. The plant code for the GM Ramos Arizpe Plant is ‘S’, for instance.
NB: The VIN is located around the driver’s side door or the windshield area.

Are Japanese or European Built Equinox Better?
Japan and Europe are not among the production locations of the Equinox.
Considering this, we cannot answer whether Japanese-made or European-made Equinoxes are better.
Where Is the Equinox Designed?
Like other Chevrolet models, the Equinox is likely designed at the GM Design Center in Warren, Michigan.
The Design Center handles R&D for most GM models.
Where Are Equinox Made for the Australia Market?
At one time, GM used to make right-hand drive Equinox models for the Australian market at the Ramos Arizpe Plant in Mexico.
It sold the models through its Australian subsidiary, Holden.
However, Holden halted orders for the Equinox in 2018 because of falling sales in Australia.
GM stopped producing Equinoxes for the Australian market in 2020 after dissolving Holden.

Where Are Equinox Made for the Canada Market?
The Canada market Equinox is made at the CAMI Automotive Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada.
The 1.7 million-square-foot facility produces about 250,000 vehicles per year — all of which are Equinoxes.
Where Are Equinox Made for the UK Market?
The Equinox is unavailable for purchase on the UK market, as Chevrolet no longer makes a right-hand drive model.
This doesn’t stop you from importing one and paying for it to get modified to right-hand drive.
Is Chevrolet Planning to Move Its Production?
GM, the owner of Chevrolet, hasn’t indicated it will move production of the Equinox models.
Presently, four factories manufacture the Equinox, and it doesn’t look like production will reduce — especially with the vehicle’s crazy sales figures.

Is Chevrolet Hiring or Firing in the U.S.?
Like some other manufacturers, GM has laid off some workers at its American plants because of a slow in demand for new cars.
Still, you can get a job with GM as it appears the company is hiring at some of its US plants.
Is Chevrolet an American Company?
Chevrolet is one of the most iconic American automotive companies.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan, over a century ago, it merged with General Motors, another American car company shortly after its establishment.
Now, it is known as the Chevrolet Division of General Motors Company and ranks as one of the highest employers of automotive workers in the United States.
