6 Popular Cars With Extra Seats In Trunk (With Pictures)

Sometimes, the need for an extra seat in a car can be quite pronounced, especially when the whole family is together. This is why cars with extra seats in the trunk are often appreciated in spite of their disadvantage.

Having explored the automobile market, we have been able to compile a list of some popular cars with extra seats in the trunk.

1. Volvo XC90 ($50,900)

The Volvo XC90 is a luxury midsize SUV introduced by Volvo into the automobile market in 2002. After twelve years after its introduction, the auto brand introduced the second generation of XC90 which spans from 2014 till the present.

Being a mid-size SUV, the Volvo XC90 can accommodate six to seven passengers. Well, if you wonder why it can’t sit 8 passengers like some of its rivals would, it’s simply because of its cramped third-row seat.

The third-row seat in this vehicle lies just a few inches away from the tailgate when popped up.

This seat can only accommodate two passengers, not three. And, for convenience, it is best for two children, not adults.

Mind you, that the third seat of the Volvo XC90 can only accommodate two passengers doesn’t mean the car is not capacious enough. In fact, roominess is one of the most acclaimed features of the SUV.

Note that the older XC90 may not feature a 7-seat layout, as the brand discontinued the five-seat design in the 2019 version. So, from 2020 upward, you can access the 6-7 seat layout in the Volvo XC90.

How About Its Price?

The MSRP of the 2022 Volvo XC90 falls between $50,900 to $72,600. This is because the vehicle comes in three trims: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. While these trims have some distinct features, they attract different prices.

The 2023 edition is a hybrid version, and it comes with a slightly higher MSRP of $56,000 – $79,900.

2. Kia Sorento ($30,090)

The Kia Sorento is a mid-size SUV that can accommodate 6-7 passengers. This is because it offers an additional third-row seat in the trunk.

While the vehicle makes a provision for a spacious second-row seat that can accommodate three passengers, it also offers an additional seat in the trunk for two more persons.

Mind you, the third row may be a little cramped for an adult, but it’ll conveniently sit two children.

Also, when the last set of seats is inclined, the cargo space may be too small to contain big luggage, but when the seats become reclined, it offers a bunch of space in the trunk.

The 2023 Kia Sorento is one of the impressive mid-size SUVs that sport an upscale interior with loads of standard tech and safety features.

Besides, its budget-friendly price makes it a top choice for people who are on the lookout for a seven-seater SUV that’ll cart away lesser bucks.

To quote its price, the MSRP for the 2023 Kia Sorento falls around $30,090 to $43,690, depending on the trim. Of course, it is available in five trims: LX, S, EX, SX, and SX Prestige.

3. Mercedes-Benz E-Class ($54,950)

If you’re on the lookout for a sedan that can accommodate 5 to 7 passengers, you might need to check out the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

While this car provides a spacious second-row seat, it also makes a provision for a jump seat in the trunk.

Surprised? Of course, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class features a rear-facing seat that can accommodate two kids in the trunk.

This is a luxury mid-size car that offers a premium interior loaded with plenty of technology. It beats most of its rivals in terms of critic ratings and performance. In fact, US News ranks it #1 out of 10 luxury midsize cars.

Aside from its expensive price tag, a major blemish to this car is its small trunk. Well, it is understandable that the inclusion of a jump seat in the trunk not only offers an extra seat for kids but also reduces cargo space.

For the price, the MSRP of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz E-Class falls around $54,950 to $75,000. Don’t forget that the car also has three trims: E350, E 450, and AMG E 53, which all attract different prices.

However, like any other car, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has problems too.

4. Mazda CX-9 ($38,750)

The Mazda CX-9 is another quite affordable vehicle on this list that offers an extra seat in the trunk. It is a midsize SUV introduced by the Japanese automaker – Mazda – in 2006.

Being Mazda’s largest vehicle so far, the Mazda CX-9 can also accommodate 6–7 passengers, as it offers three rows of seats.

While the second-row seat can conveniently contain three adults, the third-row seat is an extra seat arranged in the trunk for two additional passengers.

Based on its position, this seat may not be very comfortable for two adults, but it’ll suit two children conveniently.

Because of the provision of a third-row seat in the cargo area, the cargo space may be too small for large luggage. This is just a downside caused by the additional seat.

However, you can recline the seat to increase the cargo space.

Aside from this, the 2023 Mazda CX-9 offers a zippy turbocharged engine, and it comes at a more affordable price than many of its rivals. Its MSRP is around $38,750 – $48,460.

The price of the 2022 model is just a little lower, at $35,630 – $47,560.

5. Audi Q7 ($57,500)

The Audi Q7 is another impressive and technologically enriched vehicle on this list with an extra seat in the trunk to accommodate up to 7 passengers.

It is a luxury mid-size SUV introduced by the German automaker, Audi, in 2005. Being the first SUV offering made by Audi, the vehicle has gone ahead to offer a lot of comfort-inducing features for its occupants.

Since we are particular about the extra seat in the trunk, you can access this seat by removing the trunk cover. Afterward, press the fold button on the left side of the trunk to incline the seat.

Mind you, the third row may not be very comfortable to access by an adult because the vehicle has just four doors. Still, it can accommodate two adults or grown-up children even though it may be a little cramped.

However, for 2017, 2018, 2019, and the newer Audi Q7 models, accessing the third-row seat has been impressively simplified.

  • To get to the third row, you have to first recline the second-row seat.
  • Then, you’ll see a lever that says push.
  • Do this and pull the seat up; you’ll be automatically assisted while the seat moves up to provide broader access to the third row.

Make sure to also note that aside from the buttons in the trunk designated for the third-row seat, you can also access these buttons after you’ve reclined the second-row seat.

It’s just similar to the one in the trunk; so there should be no difficulty identifying the buttons.

The MSRP of the 2022 Audi Q7 falls around $57,500 – $73,300. The 2023 version is a little higher at $58,200 – $74,000.

6. BMW X7 ($77,850)

Unlike the X5, the BMW X7 offers a more comfortable seating arrangement, especially for a large family. It is a luxury large SUV that can comfortably accommodate seven passengers.

In spite of being a large SUV, BMW designed the X7 for seven passengers instead of eight to ensure comfort.

Whether it’s two adults or two children sitting in the third row, there’s enough hip room and leg room in the rear seats.

Besides, BMW is known for its combination of luxury and performance in a modern ride, and the X7 didn’t disappoint. It comes fully loaded with automated seats that you can adjust with the press of different buttons.

Mind you, the cargo space is quite too small when the third-row seat is in use. Remember, the seat is taking up some of the space in the trunk.

Aside from the small cargo space, the price of the 2023 BMW X7 is somewhat on the high side too. While it is available in just two trims (xDrive40i and M60i), its MSRP is around $77,850 – $103,100.

Well, the 2022 version is a little lower at $74,900 – $99,800. You might want to check the 5 best and worst BMW X7 years here.
